A missionary told how she was once describing the loving character of God to a gathering of Chinese women. As she told of the Father's love, compassion and mercy with great enthusiasm, one of the Chinese women turned to her neighbour and said, Haven't I often told you that there ought to be a God like that?

Satan dupes his victims. He stalks through the land, dabbing the pleasure of sin with a delusive sweetness, and soon after his victims, intoxicated with the poisoned draught and hardened by the deceitfulness of sin, lose all consciousness of their terrible danger.

The Gospel is not a new law. It is not a code of morals or ethics. It is not a creed to be accepted. It is not a system of religion to be adhered to. It is the good news that God will forgive and accept any person who trusts His provision of the crucified and risen Christ as the answer to their rebellion and sin.

What settings are you in when you fall? Avoid them. What props do you have that support your sin? Eliminate them. What people are you usually with? Avoid them. There are two equally damning lies Satan wants us to believe: 1) Just once won't hurt. 2) Now that you have ruined your life, you are beyond God's use, and might as well enjoy sinning.

Sometimes it seems as though we spend our lives waiting. Day dreaming about an upcoming vacation, worrying over a medical test, preparing for the birth of grandchild-our days are filled with anticipation and anxiety over what the future holds. As Christians, we too spend our lives waiting. But we are waiting for something much bigger than a trip, bigger even than retirement or a wedding: We are waiting for the return of Jesus in glory. Advent heightens this sense of waiting, because it marks not only our anticipation of Jesus' final coming, but also our remembrance of his arrival into our world more than 2,000 years ago.

Love came down on Christmas Day so many years ago and brought the greatest happiness the world would ever know... Peace came down on Christmas Day to fill the hearts of men with all the sweet tranquility each Christmas brings again... Joy came down on Christmas Day as angels came to earth heralding the miracle of our Messiah's birth.

The New Year is a time to learn to rely more heavily on the grace of God. Now I've met a few self-made men and women and so have you, but so often these people seem proud, self-centred and driven. There is another way: beginning to trust in God's help. One secret from the Apostle Paul : "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength," he said. (Phil 4:13, NIV) And God's strength saw him through pain, joy, and accomplishment.

Just think you are here not by chance but by GOD's choosing. His hand formed you and made you the person you are. He compares you to no one else; you are one of a kind. You lack nothing that His grace can't give you. He has allowed you to be here at this time in history to fulfil His special purpose for this generation. You are GOD's servant in GOD's place at GOD's perfect time.

One of the most difficult and challenging responsibilities of a Christian is holding his brothers and sisters in Christ accountable. God has not left us here as lone rangers, but He has given us a family to support and strengthen us. It is often impossible for us to be built up in our walk with Christ, until the rubble of sin and disobedience has been cleared away. As a family, we must aid each other not only in the building, but also in clearing the rubble.

What good would outward appearance be, if the soul were in hopeless darkness? To strive to keep our bodies fit and healthy is good, but a fit and healthy soul is even better.

February 24, 2004

The soldier replied: "No. I will mend it and put it back on." The elder said to him: "If you take care of your cloak, will God not be merciful to His own image?"

March 6, 2004

From a heart overflowing with gratitude, we will want to honour and glorify God by gratefully offering back to Him the many good gifts He has bestowed on us. We will not go to church to be entertained, to see "what we can get out of it" for our own private gratification, but rather to praise and worship the triune God of grace and glory
