58952: A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows Through Loss, Expanded Edition A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows Through Loss, Expanded Edition
By Jerry Sittser / Zondervan

Loss in life is inevitable, but it's possible to harness the hardship of loss and turn it into a positive event in your life. Author Jerry Sittser explores painful events like divorce, death and illness and shows that it's not the circumstances we find ourselves in at these points of loss, but how we respond to them that widens our spiritual capacity to experience blessing and growth in the midst of grief.

Highly recommended by Don Rousu, pastor of Harvest Vineyard Christian Fellowship, Edmonton Alberta
If you have ever dealt with severe loss or betrayal and have struggled with unforgiveness and brokeness, this book will change your life. Written by a man who is well aquainted to unfathomable loss, this book rings true from cover to cover.

54137: The Bait of Satan, 10th Anniversary Edition

The Bait of Satan, 10th Anniversary Edition
By John Bevere

Are you ensnared by bitterness, seized by anger, held captive by resentment because someone has offended you? Bevere shows you how to escape Satan's grip, avoid a victim mentality, practice forgiveness, experience reconciliation, and remain free in Christ. Features updated anecdotal stories and testimonies, and an extensive study guide for individuals or small groups.

Recommended by Katherine: Many Christians have left the church, choosing to believe that they are better off with not being in fellowship with other believers. Many people find as they go through life, they experience more and more betrayal and wounding by those around them. Is there a connection with learning how to deal with offenses and attracting healthy, strong relationships? Definitely! This book is a must read for any pastor as it will give them insight and tools for dealing with i house squabbles. I would buy this book and tuck it in bridal shower and wedding gifts as well.

Discipleship on the Edge: An Expository Journey through the Book of Revelation

Discipleship on the Edge: An Expository Journey through the Book of Revelation
By Darrell Johnson
Revelation is probably the most read, but least understood book of the Bible. History is replete with examples of how not to interpret it, and books featuring end-of-world prophecy consistently top the bestseller lists. Obviously, people are curious about God’s plan for the future of the world. But how can the message of such an enigmatic book be applied to our lives today?

In Discipleship on the Edge, Darrell W. Johnson drives home the challenging and practical message of Revelation in thirty carefully crafted sermons. Paying careful attention to the circumstances surrounding its composition, Johnson shows that the book is not a "crystal ball" but rather a "discipleship manual." Thoroughly researched and accessible, this collection of sermons is a helpful resource for pastors and small group leaders who are looking for models to help them preach and teach from Revelation in a time when there is so much confusion about the future.

Recommended by Katherine: My pastors, Don Rousu and Nathan Rousu have been teaching from this remarkable series for the last few weeks. Very refreshing and relevant to the days we now live in. Once you understand what was going on in the Christian church at the time Revelations was written, you'll find the book of Revelations much more easy to understand and you'll be encouraged to apply God's revelations in your life today.

613462: What Happened to Merry Christmas What Happened to Merry Christmas
By Robert C. Baker / Concordia Publishing House

The trend in North America today is to include all religions and traditions in the holiday season. To avoid offense to non Christians, the words "Merry Christmas" are being replaced with "Happy Holidays." With words and pictures, this unique book answers What Happened to Merry Christmas? by showing children that Christmas is everywhere we look, particularly in the Christian home. In the Advent wreath, the star on the Christmas tree, the nativity set, and even the gifts under the tree, what we see at Christmas reminds us of our anticipation, preparation, and celebration.

What Happened to Merry Christmas? reminds readers that God came in the person of Jesus Christ to be our Savior from sin and to bring the promise of eternal life through Him. In the pages of this book, children will learn and adults will remember to focus on Christ and His gifts to them, not on the trappings and excitement of decorations, parties, and presents. Readers will distinguish between the emptiness of a materialistic Christmas and the fullness of the Gospel. Brightly colored illustrations reinforce the message bringing children an informative and engaging book that will teach about the reason for Christmas. Recommended for ages 7 to 10.

A Thankful Heart: How Gratitude Brings Hope and Healing to Our Lives
By Carole Lewis

An "attitude of gratitude" can make a world of difference---even in the midst of life's worst tragedies. In A Thankful Heart: How Gratitude Brings Hope and Healing to Our Lives, Carole Lewis, creator of the First Place weight-loss program, shares a personal testimony of thankfulness despite the tragic death of her daughter, killed by a drunk driver on Thanksgiving Day 2001.

From Katherine: As the world's economy begins to falter and as many innocent lives are shattered by the greed of a few, we as believers will only walk in victory if we keep our hearts pure of resentment and fear. Now more than ever, our heart responses to life's adversities must be trust and faith in our Lord.

729230: The Shack The Shack
By William P. Young

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his "Great Sadness," Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant "The Shack" wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You'll want everyone you know to read this book!

Recommended by Lynn G. This book has been sweeping local churches and across the world, through word of mouth. As it is presented in a 'novel' format, this book is not threatening or preachy and can be given to non-christians or disillusioned believers who have faced live changing tragedies and wonder...."Why God?"

The Hiding Place: Corrie Ten Boom, Deluxe Edition
By Corrie Ten Boom

The Hiding Place proves that the light of God's love can penetrate even the darkest recesses of despair, places like the Nazi extermination camp at Ravensbruck. After protecting Dutch . Jews in a secret room in their home, Corrie ten Boom, her sister and father were discovered, arrested, and imprisoned. Only Corrie survived, but her faith in God remained strong---so strong that, after the war, she could forgive a former camp guard in a face-to-face meeting. More than just a spellbinding adventure, The Hiding Place is a life-changing story.

"His will is our hiding place." Corrie Ten Boom

Corrie's life was a testimony of God's grace during horrific times and the truth that an obedient, submitted heart can change the lives of thousands. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with the 'why does bad things happen to me' of life. (Katherine Walden - I lift My Eyes Ministries )

By Charles Colson / Thomas Nelson

In this new, revised and expanded edition of The Body, Charles Colson revisits the question, "What is the church and what is its relevance to contemporary culture at large?" Provocative and insightful, this book inspires us to rise above a stunted "Jesus and me" faith to a nobler view of something bigger and grander than ourselves--the glorious, holy vision for which God created the church.

Making Room for Life: Trading Chaotic Lifestyles for Connected Relationships

5992547: Handbook for Servants

Handbook for Servants
By Gayle D. Erwin

Handbook for Servants gives you answers to nagging questions for those who serve: handling manipulators, working with authority, defending Jesus, fear, forgiveness and many more...

Highly Recommended by Katherine (The webmaster of I Lift My Eyes Web Ministries )

Gayle has ministered around the world, teaching in many Youth With A Mission Schools, Men's retreats, leadership training seminars and churches. His unique viewpoint of church life and walking an authentic Christian experience debunks many of the so called 'mysteries' of Church management, yet he dismantles false notions with gentle humour and sensitivity. His "Jesus Style & Father Style " books are must have reading material for any Christian who wants to 'walk authentically' and bless others. His books have been used in many small group settings as study materials as he presents his concepts in any easy-to-read fashion, yet still provides a depth of subject matter sure to inspire a Christian at any stage in their walk.

1073531: Addicted to Mediocrity Addicted to Mediocrity
By Francis Schaeffer / Crossway Books

In this provocative book, Franky Schaeffer shows how Christians today have sacrificed the artistic prominence they enjoyed for centuries and settled instead for mediocrity. The evidence for this sad state of affairs abounds. We are flooded with "Christian" doodads, trinkets, t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc., that use God's name as an advertising - putting the Creator of the universe on the same level as soda pop!

But it doesn't have to be this way. Schaeffer shows how Christians who care can begin to reverse the slide toward mediocrity: by demanding excellence in the arts and media, and in all areas of life; by giving our time, talents and money to those things which are worthy of our support and are truly honouring to God; by staying away from the cheap, the shoddy, and the make-a-fast-buck mentality.

Schaeffer offers not only an unflinching critique, but specific and practical direction for becoming "unaddicted," and for recovering artistic excellence. The punch, humour and satire of the text is effectively enhanced by nineteen original drawings by Chicago artist Kurt Mitchell.

Katherine Recommends this book: God calls us to give him our very best. He extends his full grace and mercy towards us and lavished us with his unconditional love. Shouldn't we reciprocate in the same manner towards him and his children?

Don't Waste Your Sorrows
By Paul E. Billheimer

God's sometimes surprising tools for maturing and training His church are clearly explained in this eye-opening discussion on the role of suffering in a Christian's life. You will be amazed at the depth of spiritual growth possible for those who continue to trust God during life's difficulties.

Recommended by Ruth Rousu of Harvest Vineyard Christian Fellowship, Edmonton Alberta.

Ruth counts this book as well as "Codependent no more" as key reading for any married couple. Ruth and her husband Don just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. She counts this book as one that opened her eyes to the role of suffering in maturing Christians in their faith and the hope that comes through the fact no sorrow or tragedy is wasted when submitted to the Lord.

Filled with humour, wisdom and loving detail, the powerful story of Peter Marshall's life has touched the hearts and minds of millions of people. It is also the gripping adventure of a poor Scottish immigrant who became chaplain of the United States Senate and one of the most revered men in America.

As a young child, I was profoundly influenced by the movie, "A Man Called Peter" during a lengthy hospital stay. As an adult, I rediscovered Marshall's writings and testimony and find his refreshing, honest approach to his living faith to be an inspiration. Although we lost Peter Marshall decades ago, his faith still speaks to many.

There have been more copies of this book burned than perhaps any other single Christian book ever published. In Naples, Italy it was said that 20,000 Christians gathered in small groups to practice inward prayer. Now, for the first time ever, this book appears in modern English. 2818595: The Golden Key and Other Stories The Golden Key and Other Stories
By George MacDonald

George MacDonald (1824-1905), the great nineteenth-century innovator of modern fantasy, influenced not only C. S. Lewis but also such literary masters as Charles Williams and J. R. Tolkien. Though his longer fairy tales Lilith and Phantastes are particularly famous, much of MacDonald's best fantasy writing is found in his shorter stories. In this volume editor Glenn Sadler has compiled some of MacDonald's finest short works-marvelous fairy tales and stories certain to delight readers familiar with MacDonald and those about to meet him for the first time. Featured stories: The Golden Key, The History of Photogen and Nycteris, The Shadows, and The Gifts of the Child Christ..

Recommended by Katherine
George MacDonald's 'faerie tales' have been cited by both C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien as major influences in their Christian writing careers. I happen to own a now out-of-print edition of all of MacDonald's faerie tales and would highly recommend them to adults, as the language might be difficult for younger children, without explanation of 1900 British terminology. The allegories he weaves speak profoundly of every aspect of our Christian walk.

By John Eldredge / Thomas Nelson / W

There is a glory and a meaning to life that most people - including believers - never see. In this insightful new workbook, John Eldredge equips and inspires readers to see with the eyes of the heart. He leads readers to the deep and life-changing answers to three key questions: Why is the heart so important? Can we really trust our hearts? and How do "ordinary" people live from the heart? The powerful answers, which flow straight from the new covenant taught in Scripture, will bring dead hearts back to life.
